The Riglar lab runs on a set of core values and principles that we expect everyone in the lab to share and uphold. The intention is that the following is not an exhaustive list, but instead describes the framework of a general philosophy towards which we are working. As with everything in the Riglar lab, we aim to continually question and evolve this framework to optimise our environment and approach over time.

  • We undertake scientific experimentation and method development with curiosity, creativity and rigour to better understand the world (the gut and its resident microbes)

  • We pursue the truth - not just in our science, but also in ourselves and the way we approach our work

  • We recognise that everyone is always learning and strive for continual personal development of all lab members at all times

  • We embrace honesty, self-awareness and feedback - we are our own toughest reviewers and work to be better at both receiving and giving feedback constructively (strong egos need not apply)

  • We strive to create a supportive, collegial lab culture to allow this level of openness and honesty, and to ensure the ongoing physical and mental health of our lab members

  • We realise we can’t control science but we can control the way we do science - we ask the right questions not the easy ones; we seek truth not confirmation of our beliefs; we use the right tools not just the ones we currently know; we prefer to be correct, rather than fast; we think outside the box

  • We all take responsibility for every output from our team

  • We always question ourselves and our approaches - including these principles.
